What Are Protectors in Internal Family Systems?

Protectors are parts that try to keep you safe from emotional pain by controlling thoughts, behaviors, or reactions. Some protectors are 'managers' that try to prevent problems (like perfectionism or people-pleasing), while others are 'firefighters' that react quickly when pain shows up (like numbing, scrolling, overeating, or emotional shutdown). In IFS, protectors are respected because they formed to help you survive.
